You’ll be hard-pressed to find a gay man with a smart-phone that doesn’t have Grindr in their arsenal of apps. It’s the quintessential mobile hook-up. Whether you’re at home or in a far-away city, you can find the closest gay men in your area, browse pictures, and email them. Many sweet copulations have started at the soft glow of a smart-phone.

Well, Manhunt, the popular hook-up site, recently rolled out their new mobile hook-up app, aptly named Manhunt. [Read the full review after the jump] Those of you using Grindr will find a smooth transition into Manhunt territory, since the interface is remarkably similar and intuitive. And with useful features such as the ability to “track” certain members (perhaps a less creapy term for “stalk”), an inbox, buddy list, and the ability to see more than one member picture, I found the Manhunt app very friendly when it came to organizing and keeping track of all the boys I wanted to fuck. And if you know what you’re looking for, the “Filter” feature allows you to skip the bullshit and only show the men you want.

So how does Manhunt match up to Gindr? [Note: I’ve only tested Manhunt App on the iPhone] I found Manhunt’s interface and features to be much more useful than Grindr. It’s much easier to find the boys that you want, keep buddies, track, and filter. You can tell the Manhunt developers really understand the art of a hook-up. And it allows you to connect with ALL manhunt users, even if they’re using a PC. So that’s approximately a gijillion more hot gay men accessible by mobile phone.

Negatives? There have been complaints that the app is still a bit buggy, but when I used it I didn’t have any major problems– just a couple moments where certain pages took too long to load. And any new app will have their occasional bugs.
The app doesn’t display how far each user is from you, and there’s no grid view option. Part of the fun of Grindr is being able to see how close someone is to you.
Also, in order to use some features, you have to sign up for a paid monthly membership. It’s the same membership that you sign up for when you’re using Manhunt from a PC, but users of the Manhunt App that don’t have a full membership might feel like they’re missing something (such as seeing full-size photos, and a quarter the photos seem to be locked). However, none of the full membership features are essential to the hook-up process, so it won’t hinder your experience at all.

So, the crux of the matter— who wins the Grindr/Manhunt match-up? Manhunt. The Manhunt App is only going to get better as they update it with more features and fix some of the bugs. And with the thousands of members already on Manhunt.com that are already active in the sexosphere, that means that Manhunt already has a very active user-base.
But it’s not like there isn’t enough room in this world for both Grindr and Manhunt. Both are free and easy to use, so any horny multi-tasker can easily juggle both apps— and just like the hundreds of hook-ups sites out there, competition only makes these things better.
